HIGHLIGHTS:

Indian state of Madhya Pradesh is the major Soybean producer in the country with a five year average Soybean acreage of 5.8 million hectares. But in the 2017 kharif season the Soybean acreage in the state has declined to 5 million hectares.  The main reason for the fall in acreage was seen to be the poor productivity of Soybean during the period of 2013 and 2015, in which the productivity fell below 900 kg per hectare, which was 1300 kg a hectare during 2012 and 2016. The Soybean farmers in the state have shifted to Urad for better prospects. And the area under Urad in Madhya Pradesh has increased to 1.8 million hectares from the average of 0.85 million hectares. Around India, the area under Urad has increased to 4.21 million hectares. During the period of 2016 crop season, a record production in Urad was seen in Madhya Pradesh, as the productivity was seen at 906 kg per hectare, while the national average was seen at 645 kg per hectare. The prices of the commodity in the domestic market also played an important factor in the decline of Soybean acreage.
